Our Foundation
SMWL/CSM Annual Scholarship Fund
Gathering together for fun and fellowship is just one aspect of the Southern Maryland Women's League. Another very important part is our SMWL Foundation.
Each year, we combine our talents, time, and energy to create special events to raise funds in support of our Foundation. From Bachelor and Service/Product Auctions, Sock Hops, and Win a Mini Cooper, to our Women of Impact Awards Ceremony, our members have come together to ensure success. Over the past 14 years, the Southern Maryland Women's League has donated over $335,000 in support of programs to benefit women and children within our community.
We encourage local business owners, residents, and other women of impact to join us in our mission and support the SMWL by participating in these events and through direct donations to our SMWL Foundation. We thank you in advance for your support.
The SMWL Foundation supports programs, special events, scholarships, and a 2-year service project. We provide a minimum of three scholarships each year to support single parents enrolled at the College of Southern Maryland. Finalists for our 2-year service projects are reviewed, graded, and selected from applicants by our CSM Scholarship Committee Members.
The 2018/19 2-Year Service Project is the Center for Children in La Plata, Maryland.
The 2015/2016 2-Year Service Project is the Jude House for Women. We are honored to support this local program to help the Jude House and its gender-specific treatment for women as they transition from full-time residential substance abuse treatment to transitional housing facilities. The Jude House for Women helps residents with substance abuse treatment, psychological assistance, job training, domestic violence assistance, relationship difficulties, and more.
Over the past 14 years, our members have come together to raise and donate over $335,000 in support of programs, scholarships, organizations, education, resources, and special events in support of women and children within our community. We thank all members past and present and sponsors for contributing to this success.
The SMWL Foundation, Inc. gives an annual gift of a minimum of $3,000 to CSM to help provide financial assistance for tuition, fees, books and childcare to a parent or child of a single-parent household.
The recipients must demonstrate financial need and hardship, be enrolled in CSM with a minimum of nine credit hours per semester, reside in a single-parent household in Southern Maryland, and must explain their personal hardship and challenges through an essay of at least 100 words or more.
Applicants for the scholarship are screened and selected as qualified by the CSM Staff. Then CSM Staff provide all qualified applicants in an anonymous manner to the SMWL CSM Scholarship Committee for their scoring and selection of the finalists.
SMWL Members are invited to the Scholarship Awards Ceremony where they have the opportunity to meet the Scholarship Recipients. It is heart-warming to see SMWL’s efforts of raising money for others less fortunate than us help to ensure that a single parent or child of a single parent has the opportunity to further their education.
